Babysitter Search Options

Are you on a babysitter search? Then you know how difficult it may be to find a good one. There are a couple of good places where you could start looking for a sitter. Here are some of them:

Neighborhood

Your community is a good place to start. Some of your teen neighbors may be willing to baby sit for you. You could also put up an ad on your front lawn and wait for community members to apply. Another way would be to personally ask your neighbors if they know of any good sitters. Many parents swear that this is by far still the best way to get a good sitter. Your neighbor can vouch for the ability and character of your sitter. Then again, even neighbors can make mistakes. They may not be fully aware of a sitter\’s entire background or history.

Schools

Another option would be to look for sitters in your local high school or colleges. Many students on these levels need some extra cash for school needs and extra expenses. Advertising in a few online or offline school boards would guarantee that you would have more than a handful of prospects.

With sitters from local schools, you\’ll be able to learn more about the sitter\’s background. Most likely, they wouldn\’t have criminal records. Otherwise they wouldn\’t be in school. Nonetheless, you should still carefully screen applicants from schools to determine their character and ability.

Agencies

Babysitting Agencies – Your babysitter search can also begin in agencies. Many agencies have been around for decades. They would therefore have a lot of experience in gathering good sitters. Agencies also provide you with the option of stay in or stay out sitters. They usually conduct background investigations on their applicants to ensure that you get a good sitter. Agencies however typically cost a lot. This is especially if you need to get a stay in sitter from another region or country. You may have to spend a thousand dollars or more to get a good sitter.

Advertisements

Online Job Posts – People who wish to offer their services typically advertise. You can look through newspapers, yellow pages and even online job posts to find a baby sitter in your area. You would be hiring a virtual stranger though. This means that if you get a sitter through an advertisement, you would have to spend a great amount of time interviewing, screening and scrutinizing your prospects. You can never be too careful when it comes to the safety of your kids.

Online Services

Services online are like agencies. They have databases of sitter prospects that you can choose from. Many modern online services however charge cheaper. For a monthly or yearly membership fee, you can get a stay in or stay out sitter of your choice. These services also typically conduct background checks on potential sitters and let parents personally interview prospects. You also benefit from a number of parent resources that can give you advice on dealing with sitters.

These places are just some of the possible good sources that can help you in your babysitter search. You can choose the method that is most convenient for you. You should however always put your child\’s safety and welfare first. Pick the option where you are most certain to get a reliable sitter.

Babysitter Service: What You Need To Know

January 31, 2010 by Rashel Dan

Babysitter services are not uncommonly today. It is therefore impossible for you not to find a good sitter. The good services of your sitter however, depend to some extent on how you communicate with your sitter and how you treat her. Here are some good points to remember when dealing with your sitter.

Settle the Rate

Agree on is the sitter\’s rate. The rate will depend on a couple of factors. These include age of the sitter, number of kids to watch over, ages of the kids, amount of work to be done, hours of work and experience of the sitter. Unfortunately, there is no set rule for coming up with a permanent sitter rate. What you have to do then is to carefully talk to your sitter about an agreeable rate considering various factors. These days, it is usually quite unacceptable to pay a sitter below $3. You would have to pay over that depending on what you agree on.

Set Rules for Dealing with Kids

Give concrete instructions. If you want your sitter to be effective, you have to tell her what you want. You have to be very clear and specific with your instructions. Tell her what you allow your kids to eat or to watch on T.V. Give instructions on what to do when your child misbehaves or refuses to follow instructions.

If schedules have to be followed, then be sure to tell her about that. This may include schedules for naptime, sleep time, classes and snacks. If there are any special concerns such as a toddler that is prone to tantrums, then be sure to tell your sitter in advance.

Set Rules for the Sitter

Do you have specific rules in mind for your sitter to follow? Your babysitter service provider should also know if you have rules for her to follow. It is only natural for you to set some guidelines since she will be staying in your house. At the same time though, you should be prepared not to be too strict with your sitter. It would be very unreasonable for example not to allow your sitter to use any of your things in your living room or kitchen. The guidelines you should set may have something to do with the length of personal calls, sleeping on duty and having personal visitors while on duty.

Always Ask Questions

Have a brief chat with your sitter when you get home. Ask her how things went and if she enjoyed being with your kids. This would also be a good time to address specific concerns. Your sitter for example may have had a particularly difficult time with handling one of your kids. Ask her how she dealt with the situation and make sure to praise her if she did a good job at handling it.

Be Generous

Meals for the Sitter – Never forget to leave your sitter something to eat or drink. This is a basic courtesy. Even if you are paying her, it would be a sign of generosity on your part to offer her something extra. This is an especially good idea if she hasn\’t eaten her meal yet. Being extra kind and generous on your sitter would make her feel that only the best kind of service is expected from her.

Making Learning a Game

January 30, 2010 by Edie Mindell

Being a parent is the greatest journey one could ever take in her life. There are certain facts in life that we need to know when it comes to parenting: Parenting is a tough job; everyday is a learning process for both the parents and their children; and children usually have short attention spans.

Knowing these facts in life, as a parent, you need to be in full control of your children and to think of ideas on how to work your way to their world. Here are some of these effective ideas:

1. Teaching through games

Because children have short attention spans, they are likely to be bored every now and then especially with boring tasks. As a parent, you want your children to learn fast, and the way to get their attention to focus is to incorporate games when teaching and reviewing their lessons, so they won\’t get bored easily. Teaching through games helps the child to not only understands and comprehends his lessons, but to enjoy while learning.

2. Patience is the best virtue

When disciplining your baby, since he has yet to understand what is right from wrong, or what\’s proper and what\’s not acceptable, patience always works wonders. Every parent must learn how to practice patience when dealing with children, and not to mix anger with discipline.

3. Setting the mood

When you need to give your child a new routine from what he has been accustomed to, you need to set the right mood for him to easily adjust to new settings. For example, if your baby used to stay awake until way past midnight, and you think you need to change that sleeping routine. Say, you want him to sleep at 8 pm, you need to prepare him to sleep by 6 pm or after he finishes his dinner. By 7 pm, you need to turn off all the lights and set a dark atmosphere to make him feel sleepy. It would surely work on your baby!!!!!

4. Consistency is the key

Most of the times, moms are so easy to convince because they can\’t stand being angry with their children for a period of time. And because of this, children are so used to work their way convincing their moms to say yes every time they need it. You should correct this false belief of your children. Be strict and consistent when the situation calls for it. When you say no, always mean it and never be easily persuaded by your children. If your child has done something wrong, punish him in a proper way. Be firm when giving him a choice: either he does the right thing or he has to endure your punishment.

5. Surprise them!!!!

Experts say that rewards, when unexpected, work better than bribing. Kids are more delighted when surprised and they appreciate the gesture more. They have their moments, but they learn form their mistakes. Also make sure that you are enforcing these rules because you love them. Kids will appreciate it more.

A Couple Of Useful Steps About Baby Photography

January 29, 2010 by Adriana Noton

Photography is one way in which people can memorialize their experiences in life. A photo can be taken to commemorate a new grade, a new spouse, a new house, or just the change of the season or a difference in weight and hairstyle. Whatever is important to someone, or even just mildly interesting, photos are landmarks in life.

Babies are the most popular targets for photos and unfortunately the most difficult to capture on film. You need a lot of skill and patience in order to get a successful baby shot. One thing that you see often in such photos is red eye. Many people think that in order to capture everything well on film that they need to use a flash. This isn’t the case. In terms of babies, natural light is better than bright, glaring, artificial light.

Especially since natural light doesn’t give the baby those dreaded red eyes that so often ruin a good picture. So try using the light coming through the window or just take the picture outdoors, either way it makes a huge difference.

Not only is the bright, glaring, artificial light unflattering, it’s unnecessary and it also causes red eye in the final photograph. Natural light is best, which means that you have the choice to move closer to a window or go outside in order to take a picture then do so because it’s worth it. If you can’t though, most cameras have a red eye reduction function that you can use for the best baby photography possible.

The next point is what should be the most obvious. The background is something that should be kept simple. Your baby is the main focus in the picture and therefore shouldn’t be overshadowed by a loud, obnoxious background. You can avoid the background noise of chairs, toys on the floor, or other children in the background by zooming in or moving closer since the surroundings are very seldom as important as the child.

That means that backgrounds with too many things going on can overshadow your subject. To avoid that you can either zoom in or move closer to your baby. You can also keep them dressed in light, solid-colored clothes because patterns and ‘heavy’ colors can distort the baby’s face and eyes. Too much color, whether on your baby or off is bad for the overall image and you should work to avoid it.

Your main focus is your baby and they are often interesting enough on their own that if you need props or extra additions, they can be simple and few. When taking shots, unless you want the distorted effect, don’t use a wide angled lens. There are other ways to make an impact on a photo other than distortion and bright colors however. The simplest things are often the most effective.

Another interesting thing hat can be done is taking a photo of the baby while they are doing one of the many strange poses or facial expressions that they are famous for. Or bring in the use of mirrors and blurred backgrounds, both of which work very well in highlighting a baby’s possible worldview.

Essential Details To Avoid When Buying Toddler Furnishings

January 28, 2010 by Janet O'Reiley

These days, there are just so many choices when it comes to buying nursery items for your newborn baby. However, as a parent, it is our duty to ensure that our babies will always be safe, and that means we need to purchase quality furniture that meets our country’s safety standards.

How will you know what’s safe and what’s not? A great way is to ask family members or friends who have had babies and find out what the pitfalls of certain products may be. In addition, here are several other things for you to think about:

Is the furniture well-built enough to not wobble or fall apart? Does it meet the age requirements of your toddler as well as the height requisites? If your child is too large, there is a potential for serious accidents to happen. What do other parents say about that particular product – is the feedback positive? Is it made of baby-safe materials?

You will find reviews for most popular baby products left by others who have purchased in the past on large shopping sites such as shopping.com and so forth. That should be your first stop when it comes to doing your own research.

Bassinet & Cot Safety

A bassinet is appropriate for small babies and the advantage it has over a cot is that, it’s easily mobile and you can keep your eye on your baby while he’s napping, anywhere you want around your home.

Be careful though as some bassinets are poorly designed and have a tendency to be knocked over very easily. If you choose one that comes with wheels that you can roll around, make sure it has wheel locks for added safety.

How about a cot then? While bassinets are generally suitable for newborns, cots are for the larger infants who can move around in bed. Because of this, bassinets are no longer safe to use and cots are a more sturdy option. If you decide to purchase a baby cot that requires you to assemble it on your own, then make sure you read the instruction manual very carefully to ensure that you have put everything together the right way, or it could be a potential safety hazard to your baby.

Whatever you do, don’t install safety cushions to the cot to prevent your child from knocking themselves on the walls of the cot. You don’t need this and these cushions have been associated with many cot deaths.

There has been more than a few cases where infants have suffocated due pillows like these. Lastly, make sure the cot is clean and free of choking hazards. Any loose items or strings that could strangle a baby should not be included in the cot.
